Innovation is a great word. When I see it or hear it I begin to wonder what has not been thought of. It challenges me to think outside the box of my known reality. I believe true innovation comes from the imagination, from the world of make-believe.
Edward Boches in his blog post Assignment: Make America Passionate about Innovation outlines the need for America to emphasize innovation to maintain global leadership. With cuts in domestic education budgets, more R&D facilities are being off shored to countries like India and China.
President Obama echoed the need to innovate in his State of the Union address on Tuesday, January 25, 2010. Like Boches, President Obama argued for America’s galvanization around innovation like it was years ago around Sputnik.
I would like to echo this for my Tribe. The economy of past two years has caused many budget challenges and now is the time for the Tribal Council and administration to think outside the box. We need to be innovative in our delivery of services to Tribal members. We must innovate in our economic development with sustainable businesses. Sustainable in that they focus on a triple bottom line (Planet, People and Profit).
With strong leadership focused on a common goal our Tribe will continue as a progressive leader in Indian Country. We have the resources both human and financial to create a better Tribe for our children, grand children and for generations to come. It all starts with INNOVATION, doing it better, faster and at less cost.
